Waterford is set to feel the effects of a second Viking invasion this New Year – the Winterval Festival and Spraoi Street Theatre Company have joined forces to host the ‘Viking Invasion II’ This fun filled Viking invasion will release Vikings onto the city as never seen before, these guys are tough, but weird, fierce but fun!
Events will commence on December 27 and will continue right up to December 31 as Ireland’s oldest city prepares to celebrate it’s 1100th birthday.
According Mike Leahy at Spraoi studios “The Viking marauders will arrive Suirside with nothing on their mind except pillage and plunder. In Vadrefjord they are on a recruitment drive. Have you ever thought of joining a Viking war party? Do you see a future in pillage and plunder? Think you’ve got what it takes to strike fear into the hearts and minds of all those you encounter?”
According to Mike … “Well now is your chance!” He says, “Bring along the kids and feel the effects of a second Viking invasion in this mad alternative Viking history. Viking Marauding Ltd. is an equal-opportunities employer and is part-funded by monk’s gold, kidnapping and extortion. Similarities with the work of Monty Python and Mel Brooks are purely coincidental.”
Winterval and Spraoi invite locals and visitors to join the Viking horde for a tongue-in-cheek take on the city’s Viking heritage. Festivalgoers will encounter the warring band on a city street.
Commenting on the post Christmas festivities Chairperson of Winterval Barry Monaghan said, “We are delighted to have a post Christmas offering at Winterval this year, there will be tons for families to enjoy and of course the sales will be on at the city’s great, so just like me other dads and kids can enjoy Winterval activities and mum can enjoy the shopping.”
The thirty-day ‘Winterval’ Festival re-commences on December 27 and runs right up to the 1100th birthday of Waterford City on December 31.
If Viking pillaging and plundering isn’t part of your festive holiday plans, the post Christmas elements of the Winterval festival also include a trail of events featuring the 3D Winterval Illuminates Lightshow, a Helter-Skelter, a Victorian Carousel is on offer in the city centre, a giant Snowglobe located at Palace Square. A Winterval Express road-train and a Horse-drawn Sleigh will guide you through the streets of the city, and Waterford On Ice is ongoing for all ice-skaters.
The ‘Winterval Market’ continues in the heart of the medieval city where 60 beautifully decorated traditional log cabins specially built for the festival host an offering of the very best in food and craft.
